CPIM Slams Govt Response to Rain Disaster in Himachal, Demands ₹2000 Cr Relief from Centre

Shimla, July 5:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has come down hard on both the Centre and the Himachal Pradesh government over their "delayed and inadequate" response to the widespread devastation caused by incessant rainfall and flash floods across the hill state.

In a strongly worded statement, CPIM State Secretary Sanjay Chauhan said the disaster has left a trail of destruction—over 69 deaths, 37 people still missing, and an estimated ₹700 crore in losses as per initial government figures.

But, he added, the ground situation is far worse, with entire villages cut off, basic services like drinking water, electricity, transport and mobile networks paralyzed, and crops and fruits rotting due to broken road links.

“People are still waiting for relief. In many areas, there is no food, no medicine, and no way to reach hospitals in case of emergencies,” said Chauhan, pointing out that Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Shimla, Sirmaur, and Chamba districts have suffered the worst.

Calling the situation a climate-induced disaster, the CPIM has demanded that the Centre immediately release ₹2000 crore as interim relief and back it with logistical and material support.

The party also urged the Union government to formulate a scientific national policy to deal with such extreme weather events linked to climate change.

Chauhan has called on the state government to convene an all-party meeting, set up a Chief Secretary-led task force for coordinated relief operations, and launch relief and restoration works on a war footing.

The CPIM also pressed for:

Immediate compensation to families of the deceased

Deployment of NDRF and SDRF to trace missing persons

Temporary housing or rented accommodation for displaced families at government expense

Rapid assessment and compensation for damage to homes, cowsheds, fields and orchards

Uninterrupted supply of ration, medicines and essential items to all cut-off areas

Speedy restoration of water, power, and transport networks

Chauhan assured that CPIM cadres are actively involved in local relief efforts and urged the public to coordinate with nearby party units if any urgent help is needed.

“This is not the time for politics but for united action. The CPIM stands firmly with every affected person in this hour of crisis,” he said, appealing to the people of Himachal to come together in solidarity and support.
