Himachal Pradesh Government Vehicles Running on Credit: HIMFED faces crunch

Shimla: In a shocking revelation, over 80% of government vehicles in Himachal Pradesh are reportedly running on credit provided by HIMFED, the Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Marketing and Consumers’ Federation Ltd.

This alarming trend involves approximately 5,200 government vehicles, ranging from administrative cars to emergency response vehicles, which have been operating on fuel provided on credit for several months.

HIMFED, which is responsible for supplying fuel and other essential services to government vehicles, has been extending credit to various departments across the state. As of the latest reports, the outstanding dues have soared to around ₹15 crore, putting a significant strain on the federation’s resources.

The bulk of these unpaid bills have been accumulating from major departments, including the Public Works Department (PWD), Health Department, election and the Police Department.

This financial burden has compelled HIMFED to issue stern warnings to the concerned departments, urging immediate payment of dues to avoid disruptions in fuel supply.

Sources within HIMFED have hinted that if these payments are not cleared soon, the federation might be forced to halt services, which could severely impact government operations across the state.

The continuous reliance on credit has sparked debates about the financial practices within the state government. Critics argue that this reflects a deeper issue of mismanagement and lack of accountability.

The opposition has also raised concerns, pointing out that such financial indiscipline could lead to severe consequences, not just for HIMFED but for the overall functioning of government machinery in Himachal .
