New Delhi: Ram Sutar, one of India’s most celebrated sculptors and the creative force behind the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, passed away, leaving behind a monumental legacy carved in stone and bronze.
Widely regarded as a doyen of modern Indian sculpture, Sutar shaped some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, giving visual form to India’s history, culture and national pride.
His magnum opus, the 182-metre-high Statue of Unity at Kevadia in Gujarat, stands as a global symbol of India’s engineering prowess and artistic vision.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourned his passing, describing him as a “remarkable sculptor whose mastery gave India some of its most iconic landmarks.”
The Prime Minister said Sutar’s works would always be admired as powerful expressions of India’s collective spirit and would continue to inspire generations of artists and citizens.
Through his lifelong dedication to art, Ram Sutar immortalised national heroes and moments of pride, ensuring his creations would endure far beyond his lifetime. He is survived by his family and a vast fraternity of admirers across the world.
As the nation bids farewell to the sculptor who etched India’s pride into history, his works remain standing tall—silent yet eternal.
