Solan, April 1: What was sold as a “dream campus placement” has exploded into a full-blown crisis at Shoolini University, after a student allegedly took his own life following what students are calling a “blatant job offer scam.”

The incident has ripped the lid off how private universities hype campus placements to boost admissions—only for those promises to collapse when it matters the most.

From ₹50,000 Promise to ₹20,000 Reality

According to protesting students, the deceased had secured a job during campus placement drives where companies, allegedly backed by university claims, projected attractive salary packages of around ₹50,000 per month.

However, when he joined, the company reportedly slashed the offer to nearly ₹20,000, giving him an ultimatum—accept the reduced pay or quit.

Shattered and feeling deceived, the student returned to his hostel room and allegedly ended his life. Fellow students broke open the door after sensing something was wrong and recovered his body.

Placement Claims Under Scanner

The tragedy has triggered serious allegations that campus recruitment drives are being used as a marketing tool rather than genuine employment opportunities.

Students आरोप that inflated salary packages are showcased during admission campaigns to attract fresh enrolments, while the ground reality is starkly different.

“This is not placement, this is branding,” said one protesting student. “They sell dreams to middle-class families and deliver contracts that don’t even match basic expectations.”

Campus Boils Over

Anger spilled onto the campus as hundreds of students gathered, raising slogans against the university management and demanding accountability.

The situation escalated further when Vice Chancellor V K Khosla allegedly confronted the protesting students. Eyewitnesses claim his remarks only intensified tensions, pushing already grieving students into fury.

Police rushed to the spot to control the situation, but the protests continued late into the evening.

“Would Police Stay Silent If It Was a Common Man?”

Students accused authorities of shielding the powerful.

“If this involved an ordinary family, arrests would have been made instantly,” said a student leader. “But here, the management is being protected.”

The deceased, reportedly from a middle-class background, was the sole hope of his family. His death has left them devastated.

Demand for Accountability

Protesters are demanding:

  • Immediate registration of an FIR against university officials and the recruiting company

  • Arrest of those responsible for “misleading placement claims”

  • A judicial probe into campus recruitment practices

  • Transparency in placement data and salary disclosures

Bigger Questions for Private Universities

The incident has once again raised uncomfortable questions about the booming private education sector, where “100% placement” claims often dominate brochures and advertisements.

Experts say the lack of strict regulation allows institutions to blur the line between “offers made” and “offers honoured,” leaving students to face the consequences.

For now, the campus of Solan remains tense, with students refusing to back down.

The tragedy has turned into a flashpoint—one that could force a deeper probe into how placement narratives are manufactured, marketed, and, as alleged in this case, manipulated.
