SRINAGAR, Sept 1 — The Centre has rushed ₹209 crore to Jammu and Kashmir for immediate relief and rehabilitation. The urgent aid comes as the Union Territory battles one of its worst monsoon disasters in recent years.
Official figures put the overall death toll at 130 lives lost since mid-August. A cloudburst in Kishtwar during the Machail Mata yatra killed 65 people, left 300 injured, and over 200 missing.
In Ramban and Reasi, landslides and flash floods claimed 11 more lives, including a family of seven. On the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route, at least 30 devotees died when a landslide buried stretches of the path.
Government Response
Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a review with CM Omar Abdullah and LG Manoj Sinha. He assured that the Modi government will provide swift financial, logistical, and technological support.
The funds will be used for restoring power, water, health services, and road connectivity. Rescue teams from the Army, NDRF, SDRF, and CAPFs are on the ground. Over 5,000 people have already been evacuated from flood-hit areas.
The government has also ordered a review of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) early-warning system. AI and advanced weather models will be deployed to improve cloudburst prediction.
On the Ground
CM Abdullah inspected the Udhampur stretch of NH-44, one of the worst-hit spots. He directed urgent road repairs and relief for stranded drivers. Relief camps have been set up across affected districts, ensuring food, water, and shelter.
The Centre says assistance will continue till the situation stabilizes.
