Shimla: Supreme Court of India today upheld the disqualification of Solan's Mayor, Usha Sharma, and former Mayor, Poonam Grover that has come as blow to the government.

The Supreme Court's verdict was in response to an appeal by the two councillors, who had contested their disqualification for defying the Congress party's directives during the December 2023 mid-term elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

The Supreme Court also  stayed the Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for August 22.

The disqualification was the result of internal disputes within the Congress party, where Sharma and Grover were found guilty of defying party directives during the mid-term elections in December 2023.

Despite their appeals, the Supreme Court maintained that their actions warranted disqualification, thus supporting the initial findings of the investigation led by the Deputy Commissioner of Solan.

However, with the Supreme Court's stay on the upcoming elections, the political scenario in Solan has been thrown into uncertainty. The court's decision to halt the elections indicates a deeper judicial scrutiny into the procedural and political complexities surrounding the case.

The court rejected their plea, affirming that their actions constituted a breach of party discipline and upheld the findings of the investigation led by the Deputy Commissioner.

This consolidates the BJP's unexpected control over the Solan Municipal Corporation, with the BJP's Deputy Mayor now set to take over the reins of power
