Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Sparks Nationwide Outrage, Medical Services Hit
SHIMLA: The gruesome rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has ignited a storm of protests across India, with medical services in a state of paralysis as doctors demand justice and better protection.
This tragedy has sent shockwaves through the medical community, triggering a 24-hour strike organized by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). UDFA and RDAs joined protest call across the country.
The strike, which began at 6 AM on August 17, has seen non-emergency medical services withdrawn nationwide. The IMA’s five mani demands include immediate implementation of a central law to protect healthcare professionals, better working conditions, and a swift, transparent investigation into the crime.
Doctors from across the country, including those in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, have joined the strike, bringing outpatient services to a halt in major hospitals.
The situation is further aggravated by widespread vandalism at the RG Kar Hospital during protests, which turned violent as enraged citizens demanded accountability from both state and central governments.
The incident has left healthcare professionals and workers feeling unsafe and unsupported.
The IMA's calls for enhanced hospital security, comparable to airport protocols, reflect the severity of the situation.
The medical fraternity is united in its demand for justice and protection, with the protests echoing across the nation.
The lack of assurance from government authorities has only fueled the atmosphere with doctors demanding CBI probe, and proper security in hospitals and medical colleges in the country.
