Nagrik Sabha Rallies Against Power Privatization and hikes in tariffs in Shimla
SJIMLA: Nagrik Sabha, led by ex-Mayor Sanjay Chauhan and its president Vijendra Mehra, staged a fierce protest outside the Shimla DC office, marking the end of their week-long campaign against the privatization of electricity and the implementation of smart prepaid meters.
Sanjay Chauhan slammed the government's move, calling it "a direct assault on the public." He argued that privatizing electricity and introducing costly smart meters would burden the common man with higher bills and unreliable power supply.
Vijendra Mehra echoed Chauhan's concerns, warning that these policies would lead to skyrocketing costs for consumers, forcing many into energy poverty.
The protest, supported by various citizens, demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2022, and a halt to the privatization efforts. Chauhan vowed that this resistance is just the beginning, promising more intense action if their demands are ignored.
