Shimla, April 17: Changing weather patterns have once again put apple growers and tourists on alert across Himachal Pradesh, with fresh spells of rain, hailstorm and gusty winds forecast over the next three days.

Farmers, especially in mid and high hill districts, are staring at potential damage just as orchards enter a sensitive flowering stage.

According to the Meteorological Centre, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms is likely at several places on April 17 and 19, with wind speeds touching 40–50 kmph in districts like Shimla, Kullu, Mandi and Kangra. For apple growers, this is a worrying sign, as hail and strong winds can knock off blossoms, directly impacting fruit setting and yield.

The department has specifically advised orchardists to deploy hail nets and protective measures, as even short spells of hailstorm can cause irreversible losses at this stage. With minimum and maximum temperatures expected to dip over the next 48 hours, followed by a gradual rise, the fluctuating weather may also increase vulnerability to fungal diseases in orchards.

For tourists heading to the hills, the weather may offer a mixed bag. While light rain and snow in higher reaches could enhance scenic beauty, thunderstorms, slippery roads and reduced visibility may disrupt travel plans.

Authorities have cautioned travellers to avoid risky routes, stay updated with advisories and not take shelter under trees during lightning activity.

The weather is expected to turn largely dry after April 20, offering some relief. But till then, both farmers and visitors will have to navigate a tricky mix of spring bloom and sudden weather shocks—a reminder that in the Himalayas, calm skies can change in a matter of hours.
