Uttarakhand Reels under Relentless Rains
DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand is in crisis. The state has been lashed by continuous rains for a week. Cloudbursts, landslides and flash floods have battered roads, homes and lives.
The government has suspended the Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib Yatra till September 5. Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said safety of pilgrims is the top priority. He urged devotees not to travel until conditions improve.
In Simoti village, Bageshwar, a cloudburst has left several missing. SDRF teams with dog squads and victim-locating cameras are on the ground. Searches are going on despite heavy rain.
In Chamoli, the Pindar river is in spate. Police have issued warnings to villagers and pilgrims.People are asked to stay away from the riverbanks.
Roads across the state remain broken. On Pauri–Devprayag road, falling trees and debris blocked traffic. Fire services cleared the road with cutters and JCB machines.
On the Jyotirmath–Malari route, a bridge at Tamak Nala was washed away. Police and SDRF built a temporary passage. Stranded villagers and pilgrims are being guided to safety.
But every rescue is just firefighting. One slide is cleared, another strikes. Rivers are swelling. Hills are crumbling. Roads are collapsing, say officials.
Officials admit the challenge is overwhelming. The yatras will only resume when routes are safe again. For now, Uttarakhand stands on edge, like Himachal and J&K, facing nature’s fury.
