CP Radhakrishnan Elected Vice President, NDA Shows Strength Ahead of Bihar Polls
New Delhi: BJP veteran and former Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as India’s 15th Vice President, securing 452 votes against opposition INDIA bloc candidate Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, who managed 300 votes.
Out of 767 MPs, 752 votes were valid and 15 were rejected, with a turnout of over 96 percent.
The victory margin of 152 votes is a clear endorsement of the NDA’s unity at a time when Congress and its supporters had been hinting at cracks within the alliance.
The YSR Congress Party’s decision to back Radhakrishnan added to the ruling bloc’s tally and helped put speculation of an NDA split to rest.
For the opposition, the fight was respectable.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the INDIA bloc had secured 40 percent of the vote share, a marked improvement from the 26 percent they had managed in 2022, and insisted that the “ideological battle” would continue.
Prisoner-turned-politician Radhakrishnan, with deep RSS roots and a reputation for non-confrontational politics, will now take charge of the Rajya Sabha.
His win has been read as a reinforcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and a signal that the NDA remains cohesive.
Analysts say this result matters beyond Delhi.
With the Bihar Assembly polls drawing near, a united NDA strengthens its ground against the INDIA bloc.
While some allies like Chirag Paswan’s LJP (RV) have been making noises about retaining their independent identity, the Vice Presidential election outcome projects the image of an alliance that still votes together.
NDA has held its ground, the opposition has gained some ground, and the next big test will come on the campaign fields of Bihar.
