New Delhi, Sept 10
Back from his flood review in Himachal and Punjab, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a special Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meet on the spiralling crisis in Nepal.
The PM called the violence “heart-rending” and said he was anguished by the death of so many young people.
“The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us,” he said, making a direct appeal to “brothers and sisters in Nepal” to support peace.
India’s Immediate Moves
-
Border on alert: UP-Nepal border districts are on heightened vigil with SSB and state police stepping up patrols and identity checks.
-
Citizens cautioned: The MEA has advised Indians in Nepal to stay indoors and asked others to postpone travel. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is on standby for emergency support.
-
Flights hit: Delhi–Kathmandu air services have been suspended after violence spread to the capital; airlines cancelled or diverted flights.
-
Diaspora worried: In Himachal’s apple belt and Uttarakhand hills, where thousands of Nepalis work, families are deeply anxious about the turmoil back home.
The Nepal Flashpoint
The unrest began after a sweeping ban on social media, which triggered Gen-Z-led protests against corruption. The movement snowballed, forcing PM K.P. Oli to step down. At least 19 people have died as curfews were slapped and soldiers patrolled Kathmandu.
